Standard protocol in Michelin-starred environments suggests 18–22%. For exceptional sommelier service, a separate token is customary.
At everyday restaurants and cafes, 15–18% is widely accepted. Counter-service and fast casual require no obligation, though a small token is appreciated.
For rideshares and taxis, 10–15% is standard. Delivery drivers typically receive 15–20% of the order total, with a $3 minimum on small orders.
Hair stylists, nail technicians and massage therapists typically receive 15–20%. Many professionals rely heavily on tips as part of their take-home income.
Bell staff: $1–2 per bag. Housekeeping: $3–5 per night, left daily. Concierge who books hard-to-get reservations: $5–25 depending on effort.
Discrete gratuities are often handled via administrative ledger. Personal handlers typically expect 10–15% of the total experience cost. Cash is always preferred.
Tipping norms vary dramatically by country. What's considered generous in one culture can be offensive in another. Here's what you need to know before you travel.
Tipping is deeply embedded in US culture. Service staff often rely on tips for the majority of their income. Anything below 15% is considered poor service feedback.
Tipping is appreciated but less mandatory than the US. Many restaurants add a 12.5% service charge automatically — check your bill before adding more. Use our tip calculator to factor this in.
Tipping is considered rude in Japan. Exceptional service is expected as standard. Leaving money on the table may result in staff chasing you to return it.
Tipping is common in tourist areas and upscale restaurants. Rounding up the bill or leaving 5–10% is appreciated. Higher-end hotels may add a service charge.
Varies widely. France and Germany: round up or leave 5–10%. Scandinavia: tipping is rare. Southern Europe is more tip-friendly. Always check if service is included.
Many restaurants — especially in tourist areas or for large groups — automatically add a service charge of 10–18%. Use our service charge toggle above to avoid double tipping.
In the US, you can calculate your tip on the pre-tax subtotal — not the total including tax. Enable the pre-tax toggle in our calculator above to apply this automatically.
Use Split by Amount mode above — enter each person's food amount and the tip is divided proportionally. No need for a separate app. See our loan calculator for other financial tools.
Cash tips go directly to your server immediately. Card tips may be pooled or delayed by payroll cycles. If you want your server specifically to benefit, cash is always better.
The average tip in the US has risen significantly since 2020. Tablet-based POS systems that suggest 20–30% have shifted expectations. The new baseline is commonly considered 20%.
Common questions about how to calculate tips, split bills and navigate tipping etiquette in different situations.
For a 20% tip, move the decimal point one place left to get 10%, then double it. For 15%, find 10% and add half. For 18%, find 20% and subtract 10% of that. For example on a $60 bill: 20% = $12, 15% = $9, 18% = $10.80.
The standard tip in the US is 15–20% for sit-down restaurant service. 15% is considered acceptable, 18% is average, and 20% is considered good. For exceptional service, 25% or more is appreciated. The baseline has been shifting toward 20% in recent years.
Technically, you should tip on the pre-tax subtotal since the government collects the tax, not your server. Use the pre-tax toggle in our tip calculator to apply this automatically. The difference on a $100 meal with 8% tax is only about $1.50 at 18%, so either approach is widely accepted.
Use the "Split by Amount" mode in our tip calculator above. Enter each person's food amount and the calculator divides the tip proportionally — so someone who ordered more pays a larger share of the tip. This covers groups of up to 99 people directly in the calculator without needing a separate app.
Enable the "Service charge already included" toggle in our calculator and enter the service charge percentage. The tip is then calculated only on the remaining portion, preventing you from double-tipping. This is especially common in the UK and tourist areas worldwide.
For delivery drivers, tip 15–20% of the order total or a minimum of $3–5, whichever is more. Tip more for bad weather, difficult access, or large orders. Note that delivery app fees do not go to the driver.
Enter your bill total, select a tip percentage and set the number of people using the +/− buttons. Our tip calculator automatically shows the tip per person, bill per person and total per person. For uneven splits, switch to "Split by Amount" mode and enter each person's food amount.
